Open kitchen-how to hide it to avoid clutter in the living room

Even the most beautiful and functional kitchen has moments when it looks not very representative. It is not necessary for this reason to forever condemn her to the role of home backroom, but it is worth giving her the opportunity to sometimes go to the background, and let the honor of the house make the living room.

The open kitchen is pretty much the norm these days. In the wake of this trend, collections of furniture have appeared that allow for a consistent stylistic arrangement of the entire living space, and kitchens have acquired a living room look. But while the idea of not locking oneself behind the kitchen door while preparing meals, but participating in family and social life, is close to the modern lifestyle, not everyone is an enthusiast for cooking in the living room.

Elegantly veneered furniture or the beautiful use of a stone countertop will not protect you from the inevitable accompanying culinary activities of sounds, smells or heartburn. To minimize these inconveniences, you can use various arrangement tricks that will partially or temporarily obscure the kitchen or simply remove it from the living room. A good compromise solution may be to open the kitchen not directly to the seating area, but the dining room or the communication line. The key to success will be its location relative to the living room, so that they «do not see» each other. When planning a functional layout of the interior, it is worth taking care of the visual division of space-for example, a staircase, a furniture building or a dressing room. Then while cooking, we will keep in touch with the rest of the household, and we will not disturb them.

The functionality of the kitchen should always be based on the lifestyle and needs of the owners, but it is not without significance the space that we have-its limitations can impose an unusual location of the kitchen. But it also happens that the household simply does not want to cook in the living room or use the kitchen occasionally, just to brew coffee or prepare a French breakfast. We happened in such cases to move it, for example, to the communication line, under the stairs. One way or another, if the kitchen is to be open, it is worth making sure that dirty areas, such as the sink or the countertop on which we put the dishes, could, if only temporarily, be hidden. Mobile screens, such as sliding and accordion panels or doors, are useful here. In one of the projects, where the kitchen is separated from the living room by a lofted glass wall, we also proposed a Kotara, which after dinner – or when guests come – can be covered.

Kitchen-arrangements step by step
A well-equipped kitchen is one where we can prepare meals efficiently and at the same time enjoy a beautiful and aesthetic room. By design, such a place should be divided into specific functional zones:

· storage area for dishes (cups, plates and bowls we keep in the cupboard, and cutlery in the drawer with a special insert),

  • food preparation area (worktop, useful kitchen equipment, basic food products),
  • cooking area (stove and oven and pots and pans),

· stock zone (food with a shorter shelf life is stored in the refrigerator, and products with a longer shelf life are kept in a cabinet or a small pantry),

  • washing and cleaning zone (sink, and under it waste bins: plastic, paper, glass, organic waste and so-called mixed).

When decorating the kitchen, it is worth considering its layout. If it is quite complicated, the ideal solution will be the assembly of furniture to size. A typical solution for small kitchens or kitchen annexes is the arrangement of all zones in one row. To optimize the work, it is best to place the sink in the middle, and the oven and refrigerator on the sides. Between the household appliances and the sink, make room for a worktop. Much more possibilities are provided by the L-shaped layout, where the furniture is placed on perpendicular walls. On one of them it is worthwhile to put a refrigerator and a sink, and on the other an oven. A clever idea to gain extra space is to mount the rails or magnetic strip under the cabinets – kitchen accessories can hang on it. In the corner cabinet it is worthwhile to install rotary shelves, which gives free access to things. By having a U-shaped kitchen, we gain a lot of workspace.
